Job Summary:

Provide laboratory, Laboratory Information Services (LIS), and radiology services to the patients of the Grand Ronde Health and Wellness Center. Responsible for the implementation, adaptation, performance and documentation of the clinical lab and radiology services provided at the facility.

Essential Functions:

  • Maintains and complies with regulatory agency requirements in consultation and collaboration with regulatory agency.

  • Responsible for the development, preparation and evaluation, review and revision of policies, procedures and operational guides used in the Laboratory, LIS, and radiology.

  • Performs collections, processing, analysis, quality control, preventative maintenance, troubleshooting, and proficiency testing in the areas of Hematology, Chemistry, Coagulation, Urinalysis, and Immunology.

  • Monitors, evaluates, and interprets data obtained during testing to determine if it is feasible, reasonable, accurate, appropriately documented and charted. When actual or potential errors are detected, corrective action is taken based on Laboratory policy and judgment.

  • Assures that lab test reports, accession logs, computer generated reports and other information produced by lab and x-ray are legible, accurate and delivered in a timely manner.

  • Maintains professional knowledge and proficiency in lab.

  • Responsible for the assurance of accurately documented patient insurance information, billing, CPT and ICD9/ICD10 coding information.

  • Documents and reports deficiencies identified or demonstrated by limited permit holders and recommend appropriate remedial training.

  • Coordinates the development of, manages, amends, reviews, and approves expenditures of program budgets. Has signature authority as assigned by supervisor.

  • Ensures programs under direct supervision have appropriate measurements and benchmarks and/or goals to measure program efficiency and effectiveness.

  • Provides training and supervision for all lab personnel including support personnel such as nursing staff and medical assistants.

  • Assists limited permit holders in acquiring necessary continuing education credits to maintain their license, and maintains appropriate documentation for all lab and radiology training.

  • Maintains laboratory and radiology inventory, ordering based on quality of products, expiration dating and cost analysis.

  • Performs collection and processing of laboratory specimens for the reference laboratory and complete necessary information required for the requisition and/or the reference laboratory to LIS interface.

  • Serves both eligible and non-eligible beneficiaries in an outreach capacity both on and off site.

  • Performs a variety of other duties as assigned by supervisor.


  • Ensures the hiring, training, promoting, assigning, disciplining and discharging of employees are in accordance with Tribal Law, including without limitation, the Tribal Employment Rights Ordinance (TERO).

  • Assures staff adherence to all policies and procedures, work, safety and administrative rule, Tribal Law and State Regulations.

  • Serves as a mentor, as requested, for Tribal career development

Education, Experience, and Licenses:

  • Requires a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Medical Technology, Clinical Laboratory Science, Biology, Chemistry or related Science and a minimum of five (5) years of laboratory training in a high complexity laboratory and (2) years of supervisory experience in a moderate to high complexity laboratory or equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

  • Must maintain a valid Oregon driver’s license or obtain one upon hire, qualify for the Tribe’s vehicle insurance, and provide proof of personal vehicle insurance.

Qualifications, Registrations, and Certifications:

  • Must have a working knowledge of the Privacy Act/HIPAA and its applications.

  • Registered as Medical Technologist (ASCP) or MLS (ASCP) CM preferred, MT (AMT), CLT (HEW) may also be considered.

  • Experience in laboratory management, LIS systems, specimen collection and processing in, hematology, urinalysis, coagulation, chemistry, and immunology required.

  • Requires current CPR certification or ability to acquire within six (6) months.

  • Preferred limited Diagnostic permit in Radiology Technology (chest and extremity)

Environmental Factors and Conditions/Physical Requirements:

  • Continually requires the ability to express or receive detailed information or important instructions through oral communication.

  • Continually requires working with fingers rather than the whole hand or arm. Requires repetitive movement of wrists, hands and/or fingers. Often requires walking or moving about to accomplish tasks.

  • Requires standing and/or sitting for sustained periods of time, raising objects from a lower to a higher position and/or moving objects horizontally.

  • Occasionally requires lifting of up to 20 pounds.

  • Due to the nature of the interactions with other employees and the public we serve, employees may be required to provide documentation of, or receive, certain health vaccinations.

  • This position is frequently subject to inside environmental conditions which provide protection from weather conditions, but not necessarily from temperature changes, and is occasionally subject to outside environmental conditions.

  • Supports a safe work environment by performing all duties in accordance with Tribal safety policies and procedures, and Emergency Management Plan. 
  • Due to the nature of the interactions with other employees and the public we serve, employees may be required to provide documentation of, or receive, certain health vaccinations.

  • May be called upon to serve as a Disaster Reservist during Emergencies, or when the Tribal Emergency Operations Center is opened.

  • Local travel is occasionally required. Travel outside of the state is infrequently required.
