Tribal Court Programs

The Tribal Court has a number of programs designed to assist Tribal Members and the general public.

INDIGENT DEFENSE PROGRAM

The Court has an Indigent Defense Program that provides attorneys for parents and children involved in abuse and neglect cases. A parent is required to complete an application for such services and qualify as indigent.

TRIBAL MEMBER REVIEW BOARD

In 2003, the Tribal Court developed a Tribal Member Review Board to review cases of children in Tribal custody. Board members must be Tribal members at least 21 years of age, reside in the six-county service area, and participate in 24 hours of orientation training. Board members are approved by Tribal Council.

COURT APPOINTED SPECIAL ADVOCATES (CASA) PROGRAM

In 2007, the Court developed CASA Program. The CASA program provides an advocate for children that are wards of the Tribal Court. The mission of the CASA program to promote and advocate for the best interests of Tribal children involved in abuse and neglect cases in the Tribal Court.

PEACEMAKER PROGRAM

In 2007, the Court began developed a peacemaker program within the Tribal Court. The Peacemaker program provides a non-adversarial way to resolve disputes. Peacemaker conferences are intended to reflect the Tribe’s tradition of using respected member of the community to heal conflicts among its members. Peacemakers must be Tribal members at least 25 years of age, and known and respected in the community in which they live. Peacemakers are approved by Tribal Council.

TRIBAL COURT BAR

On October 23, 2013, the Tribal Council revised the Tribal Court Ordinance and established a Tribal Court Bar. As of December 1, 2013, counsel appearing in Tribal Court must be admitted to the Tribal Court Bar. The Court may, in its discretion, waive this requirement for a period not to exceed 60 days.

There is a $75 processing fee that must be submitted with the application. Once you are admitted to the Tribal Bar, annual dues of $25 must be paid to maintain membership.  Fees may be paid through check or money order made out to the Confederated Tribes  of Grand Ronde Tribal Court.
