Implementing Native Culture into the Classroom Environment 

Jeff and Halona are teachers in the Chinuk language preschool classroom.  Recently they have made the move towards a more culturally responsive and indigenous based classroom environment. 

Join them to talk about changes that they made and how it assists them in implementing a more culturally responsive curriculum in their preschool classroom.

Presenters Bio: 

Jeff Mercier

Jeff Mercier is currently a preschool language teacher for the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde. Jeff grew up in Grand Ronde and is a Grand Ronde tribal member. He currently resides in Grand Ronde as well. Jeff has worked in the Chinuk Language Program for Grand Ronde for the past 10 years.

Halona Butler

Halona currently works for the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde as a co-head teacher for the chinuk Early Childhood-Language Nest (preschool classroom). She has lived in Grand Ronde all of her life and is an enrolled tribal member of the Confederated tribes of Grand Ronde. She started working in the Chinuk Wawa Program at the age of 14 as a high school intern and in 2020 she received her American Indian Teaching License through the state of Oregon. Halona has continued to take classes and trainings to further her education. Halona has two children. Her son is fourteen and her daughter is five. Both of her children have had the experience of attending the Early Childhood-Language Nest classroom.
