Language in the Classroom

Language in the Classroom will offer information on the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde Chinuk Language Education Program and how this operates.  Also this session will highlight how educators could integrate language into the classroom.  Educators will also learn about resources that the program has available that are language specific.

Presenters Bio: 

Ali Holsclaw

Ali is currently the Chinuk Wawa Education Program Manager for the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde. She is a Grand Ronde tribal member and is from Grand Ronde and the surrounding communities. She currently lives in Sheridan, Oregon. Ali has been involved with the Chinuk Wawa programs and classes at Grand Ronde since 2000. In that time, she worked in many different positions in the program ranging from high school intern to Chinuk K-5 Teacher and into her current position. Ali has an American Indian Languages Teaching License through the state of Oregon and a bachelor’s degree from Western Oregon University.

Zoey Holsclaw

Zoey is currently the Post-Elementary Chinuk Wawa teacher and outreach Coordinator for the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde. She is a Grand Ronde tribal member that grew up in Grand Ronde. Zoey has a BA in Anthropology/Sociology with a minor in Native American Studies from Eastern Oregon University. She has spent time working as a preschool teacher’s aide in the Chinuk Wawa Language Program and she worked for Children and Family Services at CTGR before taking on my current position. Zoey lives in Willamina with her partner and they have an almost two-year-old daughter. They enjoy going for walks, eating snacks, drumming and singing along with canoe family and powwow videos on YouTube, and dancing in the living room.
