Chinuk Wawa Language
Rediscover the Pacific Northwest’s Historic Trade Language
Chinuk Wawa, also known as Chinook Jargon, is a trade language that originated among Indigenous tribes in the Pacific Northwest and enabled communication among diverse groups, including several tribes and European traders and settlers. The language combines elements from several Native languages (primarily Chinookan) and incorporates English and French vocabulary.
Preserving a key part of our culture through language
Once at risk of disappearing, Chinuk Wawa is seeing a resurgence, especially here within the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde, where it is being actively taught. It is used in cultural education, community events, and supported with a variety of tools.
