Grand Ronde - ODFW Fish and Wildlife Agreement
In August 2023, members of the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde gained widely expanded access to areas of the Tribe's historical homelands for subsistence and ceremonial hunting, fishing, trapping and gathering. The expanded area, which was made possible through an agreement with the state of Oregon, honors the Tribe's connection to the land and our way of life. Signed by the Tribe and the state of Oregon after the Aug. 4, 2023, meeting of the Oregon Fish and Wildlife Commission, the Memorandum of Agreement for Off-Reservation and Non-Trust Land Hunting, Fishing, Trapping and Gathering is monumental for Grand Ronde. It allows enrolled Grand Ronde Tribal Members to hunt and fish for subsistence and ceremonial purposes in an expanded area of the Tribe's historical homelands under a tribal tag.
Under the agreement, Tribal Members can now harvest for subsistence and ceremonial purposes in the Wilson, Trask, Willamette, Stott Mountain and Santiam wildlife management units-areas of the Tribe's ancestral homelands where members had been prohibited from harvesting prior to the MOA. The agreement excludes certain areas along the Columbia River, as well as the Cascade Mountain Range summit and areas east of the summit to avoid overlapping with other tribes.
This agreement is the next step in cooperative management between Grand Ronde and Oregon. Agreements outlining ceremonial fishing at Willamette Falls are already in place.
MOA Hunting Information for Tribal Members
As part of the historic agreement with the State of Oregon, the Tribe's Natural Resources Department issues hunting tags in the expanded area outside of the Trask wildlife management unit. These units include Wilson, Willamette, Stott Mountain, and Santiam Unit with a modified eastern boundary. The tags under the new MOA are available for enrolled Grand Ronde Tribal Members and are administered over the counter on a first come first serve basis. Tags MUST be reported within 30 days after tag expiration. If tags are not reported, the l result in the hunter not receiving tags for the following hunting year.
