The process of creating the curriculum was a Tribal wide effort. Several departments including the Tribe’s Education Department, Tribal Library, Natural Resources, Cultural Resources Department and many other Tribal staff were involved.

The curriculum include numerous topics that span social studies, math, science and language arts; and each lesson aligns with the Common Core State Standards.

Each lesson is designed to stand alone and includes activities such as story writing, fiction and non-fiction reading, compare and contrast, presentations, mapping, investigation and much more. Lessons were created by keeping diverse student learning styles in mind. Teachers can easily adapt lessons to fit the needs of their classrooms and student learning styles.

We encourage teachers to preview each lesson and adjust it so that it fits the students they are serving, while keeping the content intact. If there is a need or desire to modify any piece of the curriculum, please reach out to our Curriculum Specialist Cheyanne Heidt, cheyanne.heidt@grandronde.org, for assistance with this task.

We would like to thank you for taking the time to learn and teach about the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde. This curriculum began as a pilot project in the fall of 2013 that was brought about by the need in Oregon schools for historically accurate and culturally relevant curriculum about Oregon Native Americans and as a response to countless requests from Oregon teachers for classroom ready materials on Native Americans.

5th Grade ELA

CTGR 5th Grade ELA Unit

The lesson plans below are easily modified and adaptable to the needs of any classroom. They place an emphasis on culture and cultural connections. These lessons can be taught in-conjunction with each other or as stand-alone lessons.

The lessons cover a variety of topics including Native lands, ancestors, traditional lifeways, creation stories, and the connections between past and present.

If you are looking for more Native American stories to apply these concepts to, we have provided a list of recommended Native American titles to help further educate students about Native American history and culture. This Recommended Reading List can be found in the “Other Resources” section of the Curriculum webpage.

The lesson plans below include both PDF and presentation documents to be used in the classroom.

5th Grade Math & Science

CTGR 5th Grade Math & Science Unit

The math and science lessons below work to supplement the CTGR 5th Grade Social Studies lessons and can be taught in-conjunction or as stand-alone. The math lesson covers a variety of cultural/historical objects and their uses, as well as mathematical concepts.

The science lessons allow students the opportunity to explore the flora and fauna of the Grand Ronde Reservation and the relationships that exist between them.

The goal of these lessons is to create a comprehensive Native American curriculum that spreads Native American culture and history across multiple subjects, rather than specifically Social Studies.

The lesson plans below include both PDF and presentation documents to be used in the classroom.
