Presenter Bio:

Crystal Starr Szczepanski

Crystal is currently the Culture Center Supervisor for the Chachalu Museum and Cultural Center with Cultural Resources Department at

the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde. Crystal is from the Alaskan Native Village of Holy Cross on the lower Yukon River and has been residing in Grand Ronde, Oregon since 1997. She is Athabascan and Yup'ik from South West Alaska and snʕáyckstx (Lakes) and sənpʕʷilx (San Poil) bands from The Confederated Tribes of the Colville Reservation. Crystal has worked for the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde since 1997 in various departments such as the Grand Ronde Health and Wellness Center, Social Services Department, and Administrative Assistant for Tribal Council. In 2004 she started working in the Tribal Language Department. During this time, she earned her Native American Indian Language Teaching License for chinuk wawa from the University of Oregon, Northwest Indian Language Institute. She went on to become the Head Teacher in the Preschool chinuk wawa Immersion Program and then into the chinuk Language Specialist/Liaison role. In the spring of 2019 Crystal started in the Cultural Resources Department at the Chachalu Tribal Museum and Cultural Center. She first worked as a Cultural Education Specialist and is now currently the Cultural Center Supervisor. Crystal is an artist in Traditional Indigenous methods and self-taught in contemporary art. She has illustrated seven children's books for the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde. She enjoys weaving, carving, sewing, painting, drawing, and participating in cultural dances on Tribal Canoe Journey and Pow wow's. Other areas of interest include Ethnobotany of the Pacific Northwest, Copperplate calligraphy written in English, and chinuk wawa. And currently studying Mandarin and Holikachuk Athabaskan.
